Materials:
Super Saver Worsted weight yarn
A ­ Bright Yellow
B – White
C – Black
D ­ Heather Grey (or Lighter)
E – Blue
F ­ Turquoise
Size 3 mm (U.S. crochet hook
Yarn needle (to sew in ends)
Buttons (optional)
Stitch Guide:
ch = chain
dc = double crochet
hdc = half double crochet
sl st = slip stitch
sc = single crochet
Instructions:
Note:  ch 2 at beg of round counts as dc.
With A, make a slip knot, ch 4
Round 1:  11dc in 3rd chain from hook.  Join with sl st to top of ch 3. (12 dc)
Pull slip knot tight to close hole.
Round 2:  Ch 2, dc in same stitch.  2dc in each dc around.  Join with sl st at top of ch 2.  (24 dc)
Round 3:  Ch 2, 1 dc in same sp as sl st.  *1 dc in next dc.  2 dc in next dc. Rep from * to last dc.  1 dc in last dc.  Join
with sl st at top of ch 2. (36 dc)
Round 4:  Ch 2, 1 dc in same sp as sl st.  *1 dc in next 2 dc.  2 dc in next dc.  Rep from * to last 2 dc.  1 dc in each of last
2 dc.  Join with sl st at top of ch 2.  (48 dc)
Round 5:  Ch 2, 1 dc in same sp as sl st.  *1 dc in next 3 dc.  2 dc in next dc.  Rep from * to last 3 dc.  1 dc in each of last
3 dc.  Join with sl st at top of ch 2.  (60 dc)
Round 6:  Ch 2, 1 dc in same sp as sl st.  1 dc in each dc around.  Join with sl st at top of ch 2.  (60 dc)
Round 7:  Ch 2, 1 dc in same sp as sl st.  1 dc in each dc around.  Join with sl st at top of ch 2.  Fasten off (60 dc)
Round 8:  With C, pull up loop in 3

 last stitch of previous round.  Ch 2, dc in same sp as sl st.  1 dc in each dc around.
Join with sl st at top of ch 2.  (60 dc)
Round 9:  Ch 2, 1 dc in same sp as sl st.  1 dc in each dc around.  Join with sl st at top of ch 2.  Fasten off (60 dc)
Round 10:  With A, pull up loop in 3

Rounds 11­14 (15 for longer or not adding blue):  Ch 2, 1 dc in same sp as sl st.  1 dc in each dc around.  Join with sl st
at top of ch 2.  Fasten off (60 dc)
Round 14/15:  With E, pull up loop in 3

around.  Join with sl st at top of ch 2.  Fasten off (60 dc)Ear flaps:
Lay beanie flat with ending tail on one side, mark each side for ear flap placement.
With E, pull up loop in 6

 stitch before sl st (marker).  Ch 1 (counts as 1sc), sc in next 12 dc. (13 sc)
Turn, sc in 2
nd
 stitch from hook.  Sc in each st across to last sc.
Repeat until you have 4 sc remaining.
Repeat for other ear flap.
Edging:
Right side facing (outside)
With E, pull up loop in corner stitch to left of an ear flap, ch 1. *hdc in each st across.
Working up the ear flap, hdc in the end of each row.
hdc in each sc across the bottom of the ear flap (4) .
Working down the ear flap, hdc in the end of each row back to the hat rim.

Repeat from * to * once.   Join with sl st at top of ch 1.  Fasten off.
Sew in any loose ends.
Eyes (make 1 or 2):
With C, make a slip knot, ch 4
Round 1:  11dc in 1st chain (slip knot).  Join with sl st to top of Ch 4.  Fasten off.  Pull slip knot tight to close hole.  (12 dc)
Pull slip knot tight to close hole.
Round 2:  With B, pull up loop in 2
nd
 last stitch of previous round.  Ch 2, dc in same sp as sl st.  2 dc in each dc around.
Join with sl st at top of ch 2.  Fasten off.  (24 dc)
Round 3:  With F, pull up loop in 2
nd
 last stitch of previous round.  Ch 1, hdc in same sp as sl st.  *1 hdc in next dc, 2 hdc in
the next dc.   Rep from * to last dc.  1 hdc in last dc.  Join with sl st to ch 1.  Fasten off.  (36 dc)
Round 4:  With D, pull up loop in 2
nd
 last stitch of previous round.  Ch 1, 1 hdc in each stitch around.  Join with sl st to ch 1.

Round 5:  Ch 1, 1 hdc in each stitch around.  Join with sl st to ch 1.  Fasten off.  (36 dc)
Sew in any loose ends.
Note:
To add a “gleam of light” in the eye just use a small piece of white yarn and sew it into the black of the eye.
Assembly:
Position eyes on beanie and using D slip stitch around the eye between rows 3 and 4 of the eye to the beanie.
When attaching 2
nd
 eye connect to both the beanie and the first eye.Facial Details:
Using C sew mouth on beanie.  Add hair to top of beanie (as desired) by pulling a loop through and then threading ends
through that loop.
Tassels:
Measure 12 strands of E, each 24” long (or longer if you like).
Take 3 strands, fold in half, and using your hook pull through one of the stitches at the bottom one of the ear flap, thread
ends through loop and pull to tighten.
Repeat for all 4 hdc in bottom of ear flap until all 12 strands are attached.
Divide loose strands into 3 groups and braid.
About 2” from the bottom of the ends take another 12” strand of blue and wrap around the braid, tie and knot.  Sewing the
ends up into the braid to strengthen.
Finish off by trimming the ends even.
Repeat for other ear flap tassel.
